Business Consulting Vs. Coaching: What’s the Difference?
One of the most commonly asked questions we get is, “What is the difference between business consulting and business coaching?”
This is one of our favorite conversations to have. We will shout it from the rooftops that Business Coaching offers an approach and produces results that are very unique from consulting.
To put it simply, business consulting tells you the “what” and Coaching shows you the “why” and “how.”
For example, imagine a CEO is overwhelmed by the tasks, responsibilities, and decisions that cloud his everyday to-do list. Because he is constantly putting out fires and trying to play catch-up, the company is now suffering. A consultant may come in and tell him where the bottlenecks are happening in productivity–For example, because the CEO is behind on making a decision on next quarter’s product prototype, the engineering team is falling behind on development.
However, a Coach would likely make him aware of the issues, but dig deeper to resolve the root cause. The Coach might explore why the CEO is falling behind. The Coach might discover that it comes down to the CEO having a fear of trusting others with projects that should be delegated. Once the CEO and Coach work through this root fear, they can work together to making the CEO a delegation-master.
At the core, business consulting gives information, but Business Coaching brings transformation.
